== Moderation Policy ==

It is expected that all discussions will have a tone of respect. It is important that all discussions are held in an intelligent and amicable manner. There will be '''no tolerance''' for any person-based attacks, passed judgement (be it on issues ranging from gameplay to lifestyles), or incendiary language (dramatic communication with the intention of provoking a strong reaction from other users). This does not mean that debate is disallowed- only that it must be constructive. However, critiquing of posts is only allowed when specifically requested by the original poster.
+
The Roll20 Code of Conduct serves to foster a helpful and friendly environment for the community. However, when violations occur, our moderation team will investigate all parties involved on a case-by-case basis. The following outlines moderation actions that may be taken on Roll20:

== Civil Discussion ==
+
* A public and/or private warning may be issued
 +
* The post(s)/thread(s) may be closed or removed
 +
* A suspension may be placed on the account ranging from a day to a year
 +
* A permanent ban may be placed on the account

Discussion should be centered around adding to our community in an intelligent manner. For that purpose, we ask that you refrain from:
+
Above provides the typical course of action from first offense to multiple offenses. However, action taken may be more lenient or severe depending on the seriousness of the violation and user history.
* Repeated submission of content unrelated to the theme of a thread or topic, obstructing communication.
+
* Repeated intentional submission of identical content or incomprehensible content, or "trolling".
+
* Submission in a language other than a designated language (for moderation purposes).
+
* Criminal acts or conduct related to said acts in submissions.
+
* Discrimination, insults, slander or offensive speech; damaging the reputation or trustworthiness of another.
+
* Use of foul language and aggressive tone.
+
* Publication of any personal information or information related to personal privacy, regardless of ownership.
+
* All conduct potentially bringing disadvantage to our company or the management of our company.
+
* Any other behavior deemed inappropriate by administrators.
+
<br />
+
Trolling, whining, passive aggression, reliance on memes, spamming, irritating repetition (including topic/post duplication), and intentionally unclear or misleading posts are not welcome. Furthermore, while these areas are intended for adults, clearly explicit content is prohibited. Please make an effort to use the best grammar available to you.
+

== No Piracy Allowed ==
+
=== What is a suspension or ban? ===

We do not allow the encouragement or distribution of pirated works. This is not meant to target the showing of interfaces or fan work accomplishments- only actions that undermine the rights and property of others.
+
A suspension is a temporary restriction from the public areas of Roll20. A ban is a permanent restriction from the public areas of Roll20. This does not prevent access to one's games, game forums, uploaded or purchased material, or viewership of the Roll20 site.

== Competing Interests and Sales ==
+
A suspended or banned user will be prohibited from participating in the following activities for the duration of the suspension or ban:

Any promotion of outside sales items or fundraising is prohibited without prior approval from Roll20. Exceptions will be granted only for items that are of strong interest to the community and do not compete with our own products. Please contact team@roll20.net for approval.
+
* Post a new thread or reply to any existing threads on the public forums
 +
* Participate in the Looking For Group system
 +
* Send private messages

== Official Sources of Information ==
+
Any attempt to circumvent a ban by posting on another account or having an external party post on one's behalf, will result in all involved being subject to a suspension or ban.

While we encourage all of our users to aid each other by answering questions and making suggestions, the only official source of information regarding Roll20 comes directly from those marked as members of the<div style="width: auto; display: inline-block; margin-left: 5px; position: relative; top: -2px; background-color: #ee2b7b; padding: .2em .5em .2em; font-size: 14px; min-width: 10px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 1; color: #fff; text-align: center; white-space: nowrap; vertical-align: baseline; border-radius: 10px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif;">Roll20 Team</div> and<div style="width: auto; display: inline-block; margin-left: 5px; position: relative; top: -2px; background-color: #3a87ad; padding: .2em .5em .2em; font-size: 14px; min-width: 10px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 1; color: #fff; text-align: center; white-space: nowrap; vertical-align: baseline; border-radius: 10px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif;">Mod Team</div>. Any requests made by them within a topic require strict adherence.
+
=== Breaching the Terms of Service ===

Furthermore, any attempted impersonation of moderators or Roll20 staff will result in an immediate permanent ban.
+
Roll20's Terms of Service and Privacy Policy applies to all areas of the site. A breach of these terms will be subject to the penalties outlined in the Terms of Service.
== Prediction of Developer or Moderation Action ==
+

Any and all posts predicting how a '''Developer''' or '''Moderator''' will address an issue will be deleted- with the offending poster being banned. If you see an issue on the forums you think needs attention, please "Report" the post and let the Moderators address it- do not attempt to publicly solve (or predict the solution) yourself.
+
=== Questions and Appeals ===

'''Similarly, arguing with Moderators or Developers on the forums will result in a ban.'''
+
If you have questions or intend to appeal moderation action that has occurred, please contact Roll20 directly at Team@Roll20.net. Be sure to include any relevant information (URLs, screenshots, etc.). We will reply to your questions (barring information which may infringe on the privacy of another user) as soon as we can.

== Abuse of the "Report" Function ==
+
== Discrimination and Harassment ==

The "'''Report'''" function keeps the community safe and the team vigilant. Any abuse thereof will result in a warning and if the behavior persists, a ban.
+
Roll20 holds a zero-tolerance policy regarding discrimination and harassment. Bullying, discrimination, or harassment of any user or group (either in clear or coded language, or through links or images) is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

== Enforcement of the Code of Conduct ==
+
Infringement of this section is subject to moderation action as outlined by the Moderation Policy.

Use of the community areas is a privilege, not a right. By participating in the community areas of Roll20 (Forums, Looking for Group system, Wiki, etc) you are agreeing to abide by this Code of Conduct. If you choose to disregard it or attempt to circumvent its intent, we will take appropriate action, including removal of your ability to participate in the community areas of Roll20. This applies equally to both free and paid users of Roll20.
+
== General Guidelines ==

If you feel that another user has acted inappropriately or violated these guidelines, please use the "'''Report'''" function to notify us or contact us at team@roll20.net as needed.

=== Area Specific Guidelines ===
Looking for Group (LFG) listings for 18+ games must be marked as such. Any content in your public LFG listing- including game description, username, or game forum posts, '''must''' be PG-13 in nature. Content that breaks our [https://wiki.roll20.net/Code_of_Conduct Roll20 Code of Conduct] or [https://wiki.roll20.net/Terms_of_Service_and_Privacy_Policy Terms of Service] will be removed.

The LFG Forums and the LFG Tool are meant to promote games and find groups to play with on Roll20. == Inclusivity ==
+
We ask that users refrain from posting links, promoting, fundraising, or soliciting outside advertising or sales. If you have additional questions or believe your post to have a strong interest to the community, please contact us directly at Team@Roll20.net.
All Looking For Group postings should be in the spirit of inclusion as opposed to exclusion. This will allow you to best attract the gaming group you wish to interact with instead of attempting to repel those you don't.
+

Two important caveats to this:
+
Infringement of this section is subject to moderation action as outlined by the Moderation Policy.

# You may advertise seeking to associate with those whom you share a common background (gender, cultural background, etc.). However, if in this process your post is discriminatory, inflammatory, or spends time on exclusion-- particularly towards those that face systemic oppression-- the post will be removed and further moderation as necessary.
+
== Official Sources and Backseat Moderation ==
# You may not create a post seeking someone of a different background that you do not share. While we appreciate your desire for inclusion, specifically targeting a group in your post becomes an issue of tokenism and is not permitted. This will result in your post being removed and further moderation as necessary.

== Off-Topic Posting ==

The only official sources of information regarding Roll20 comes directly from those marked as members of the Roll20 Team and the Mod Team. Attempting to impersonate the Roll20 Team or Moderators is prohibited.

Please only reply in LFG threads that you are actually interested in joining. Comments that do not reflect the original poster's request are considered “off-topic” and against the [https://wiki.roll20.net/Code_of_Conduct Roll20 Code of Conduct].

Additionally, the Roll20 Team and the Mod Team are the only entities which should be performing moderating duties. If you believe a user is violating the Code of Conduct or Terms of Service, please refrain from replying and take advantage of the Report feature so that our moderation team can handle the situation-- do not try to take the matter into your own hands.

Bumping posts is discouraged and should be avoided, this falls under the “irritating repetition” mentioned in the Civil Discussion section of the [https://wiki.roll20.net/Code_of_Conduct Roll20 Code of Conduct]. To gain more exposure, try using the Looking for Group listings.
+
All Looking for Group postings and listings should be in the spirit of inclusion as opposed to exclusion. This will allow you to best attract the gaming group you wish to play with instead of attempting to repel those you don't.

Please only create threads for upcoming games in Roll20. Similar to our Looking for Group tool, please only advertise for games up to 3 months in advance.
+
Additionally, we ask that you refrain from creating a post seeking someone of a specific different background (such as creed, disability, gender, orientation, race, etc.)  than yourself. While we appreciate a desire for inclusion, such posts specifically targeting a group becomes an issue of tokenism-- looking to fill a spot with someone removed of their individuality save for that specific descriptor.

== Pay-to-Play and Paid Game Mastering ==
+
Any attempt to discourage others from playing through the use of bullying, discrimination, or harassment, is subject to the same moderation actions as outlined in the Discrimination and Harassment section of the Code of Conduct.
Currently, paid Game Mastering is allowed without prior approval from Roll20. Roll20 is not responsible for any payment transactions and cannot enforce any private arrangements.
+

Pay-to-Play games on the Looking For Group (LFG) forum require a link to their LFG listing and may not be advertised on the LFG forum without a link to their LFG listing. However, any attempt to advertise Pay-to-Play games or paid GM services to users who have not explicitly asked for it in the relevant post is strictly prohibited.
+
Infringement of this section is subject to moderation action as outlined by the Moderation Policy in the Roll20 Code of Conduct.

'''Additionally, Pay-to-Play posts in the LFG forum must contain the following payment disclaimer:'''

== Paid Game Guidelines ==
<blockquote>'''This game will require payment to the Game Master at a rate of [to be filled with a description of your method, amount, and frequency of payment]. Roll20 is not responsible for any payment transactions and cannot enforce any private arrangements.'''</blockquote>
+

There is a checkbox in our LFG tool for Pay-to-Play games. If you are creating a Pay-to-Play LFG listing, you '''must''' have this selected, and list the desired price per session/game in the field that is provided. This will automatically place the required payment disclaimer for your Pay-to-Play games.
+
Currently, paid games are allowed without prior approval from Roll20. Please note that Roll20 is not responsible for any payment transactions and cannot enforce any private arrangements. Below outline some additional requests for paid games that must be adhered to in order to maintain transparency for players (or GMs) looking to play in paid games. These requests apply to all forms of payment (per session, static, tips, variable price, etc.)

Any Pay-to-Play games on the LFG forum that do not list a description of method, amount, and frequency of payment will be considered off-topic and disabled.
+
* All paid games using the LFG Tool must correctly mark their game as such via the checkbox
 +
* All listings must provide a clear description of payment method, payment amount, and payment frequency
 +
* Paid games on the Roll20 LFG Forums require a link to their respective LFG listing within the LFG tool
 +
* All paid games posted to the Roll20 LFG Forums require a payment disclaimer within the original post (provided below)
 +
* Do not attempt to solicit users-- through private message or a post in a seeker's thread-- if they have not explicitly stated an interest in your paid game

Links to Patreon (or other such sites) are only permitted for pre-approved community members who are contributing either Character Sheets or API Scripts. If you wish to solicit your players directly for funding, you may do so privately, but no such links are permitted in a public setting.

<blockquote>'''This game will require payment to the Game Master at a rate of < to be filled with a description of your method, amount, and frequency of payment >. Roll20 is not responsible for any payment transactions and cannot enforce any private arrangements.'''</blockquote>

'''Tipping''' your GM is allowed, but when a GM explicitly solicits tips in their LFG listing or game, they should mark it as Pay-to-Play. As in all places on Roll20, GMs are to treat their players with respect when it comes to this issue. If a GM expects payment for their GM services, they should mark their game as Pay-to-Play.

Tipping

Additionally, like Pay-to-Play posts in the LFG forum, any games soliciting tips '''must''' contain the following payment disclaimer:

We hold a high standard for discussion in the community areas of our site (including the Forums, Looking for Group system, and Wiki), beyond our Terms of Service. By choosing to participate in the community here, you are expected to abide by the guidelines outlined below. This is our community, and as stewards of it, we have an obligation to promote a healthy and positive discourse.

Roll20 Code of Conduct

Welcome to Roll20! These forums are available as a helpful and friendly place to discuss the Roll20 program, answer questions, and provide assistance to the community. In order to ensure Roll20 remains a welcoming environment for everyone, we ask that all participants treat others with respect, courtesy, and civility. At Roll20, everyone is welcome at the table.

The policies below provide guidelines of what is expected from all community members using public areas of Roll20. Note that these rules are not comprehensive and do not address all manner of offensive behavior. As such, moderators shall investigate any behavior reported or deemed inappropriate.

Intended Use

The Roll20 Forums exist to discuss topics directly relating to the Roll20 program and systems. Anything that could more fittingly be discussed on another site should be discussed there.

Infringement of this section is subject to moderation action as outlined by the Moderation Policy.

Moderation Policy

The Roll20 Code of Conduct serves to foster a helpful and friendly environment for the community. However, when violations occur, our moderation team will investigate all parties involved on a case-by-case basis. The following outlines moderation actions that may be taken on Roll20:

  • A public and/or private warning may be issued
  • The post(s)/thread(s) may be closed or removed
  • A suspension may be placed on the account ranging from a day to a year
  • A permanent ban may be placed on the account

Above provides the typical course of action from first offense to multiple offenses. However, action taken may be more lenient or severe depending on the seriousness of the violation and user history.

What is a suspension or ban?

A suspension is a temporary restriction from the public areas of Roll20. A ban is a permanent restriction from the public areas of Roll20. This does not prevent access to one's games, game forums, uploaded or purchased material, or viewership of the Roll20 site.

A suspended or banned user will be prohibited from participating in the following activities for the duration of the suspension or ban:

  • Post a new thread or reply to any existing threads on the public forums
  • Participate in the Looking For Group system
  • Send private messages

Any attempt to circumvent a ban by posting on another account or having an external party post on one's behalf, will result in all involved being subject to a suspension or ban.

Breaching the Terms of Service

Roll20's Terms of Service and Privacy Policy applies to all areas of the site. A breach of these terms will be subject to the penalties outlined in the Terms of Service.

Questions and Appeals

If you have questions or intend to appeal moderation action that has occurred, please contact Roll20 directly at Team@Roll20.net. Be sure to include any relevant information (URLs, screenshots, etc.). We will reply to your questions (barring information which may infringe on the privacy of another user) as soon as we can.

Discrimination and Harassment

Roll20 holds a zero-tolerance policy regarding discrimination and harassment. Bullying, discrimination, or harassment of any user or group (either in clear or coded language, or through links or images) is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

Infringement of this section is subject to moderation action as outlined by the Moderation Policy.

General Guidelines

Official Sources and Backseat Moderation

The only official sources of information regarding Roll20 comes directly from those marked as members of the Roll20 Team and the Mod Team. Attempting to impersonate the Roll20 Team or Moderators is prohibited.

Additionally, the Roll20 Team and the Mod Team are the only entities which should be performing moderating duties. Posting to LFG & Paid Games

Welcome to Roll20! We have some guidelines in addition to our Code of Conduct so that we can keep things tidy and friendly, please be sure to follow the rules below for both forum posts and listings in the LFG tool.

Please unde1rstand that many of these guidelines require your best judgement, so please be respectful. If you are not sure, please refrain from posting and email us directly at Team@Roll20.net outlining any questions you may have and we will reply as soon as we can.

General Guidelines

We ask that users adhere to the following requests when creating a listing or post:

  • Only use the LFG tool and forums for games happening on Roll20
  • All content in an LFG post and/or listing must be PG-13 in nature (game description, username, pictures, etc.)
  • Any games intended for audiences 18+ must be marked as such

  • Refrain from publicly posting links to off-site communities (Discord, Facebook groups, etc.) on the LFG Forums and LFG Tools†

†You may share this content in private (i.e. game details page, game forums, or sent via private message).

Infringement of this section is subject to moderation action as outlined by the Moderation Policy in the Roll20 Code of Conduct.

Inclusivity

All Looking for Group postings and listings should be in the spirit of inclusion as opposed to exclusion. This will allow you to best attract the gaming group you wish to play with instead of attempting to repel those you don't.

Any attempt to discourage others from playing through the use of bullying, discrimination, or harassment, is subject to the same moderation actions as outlined in the Discrimination and Harassment section of the Code of Conduct.

Infringement of this section is subject to moderation action as outlined by the Moderation Policy in the Roll20 Code of Conduct.

  • All paid games using the LFG Tool must correctly mark their game as such via the checkbox
  • All listings must provide a clear description of payment method, payment amount, and payment frequency
  • Paid games on the Roll20 LFG Forums require a link to their respective LFG listing within the LFG tool
  • All paid games posted to the Roll20 LFG Forums require a payment disclaimer within the original post (provided below)
  • Do not attempt to solicit users-- through private message or a post in a seeker's thread-- if they have not explicitly stated an interest in your paid game
