Roll20 Announcements Panel Wrap-Up Oct. 24th(Blog, Archived):
- "And, of course, we showed off some of the in-progress work on Roll20 Mobile, an upcoming companion app for Android and iPhone from Roll20. We’re currently working on Character Sheet integration and mobile dice rolls that go straight from the app to the VTT. We’re in the internal testing stages, with a closed beta coming soon and a more open beta after that. We’re very excited about the future of Roll20 Mobile, and we can’t wait to show you what we’ve cooked up. We’ll have more news on it soon."

General
Features
App is still in development, so features and when they will be available is sure to change. Andreas J. (talk) 20:27, 7 March 2021 (UTC) |
The Mobile App is intended to be a companion app to Roll20, having parts of the platform easily accessible on your phone.
Planned Features (For the Beta or at launch)
- Accessing character sheets on your phone. - Test starting with the D&D 5E-sheet, but will be extended to other sheets later. Roll20 is currently testing an update to the character sheet system
- Making dice rolls from the sheet
Unconfirmed Features and Old Mentions (Mentions from Early 2020 that might not be relevant in 2021, or inferred features based on public roll20 comments)
- Making Simple Dice Rolls to Chat - If one is able to roll dice from a sheet, it would make sense to also be able to do simple rolls with something similar like Roll GUI
- Compendium Access - Accessing the External Compendium. In early 2020, this was one of the possible features mentioned in one of the Community Roundtables.
- Text Chat - Access to read and reply in the q Text Chat was mentioned in Early 2020 as one of the planned features. This would free up screen space if you have Roll20 open on the Computer. This would make running completely text-based games on Roll20 much easily on your phone, as the rest of the platform wouldn't be needed.
- Offline Usage - Some Offline features where mentioned to planned, and was made to sound like the tool was intended to have uses for In-Person games, without using the full Roll20 platform.
- Dice Rolls - In early 2020, this was one of the possible features mentioned in one of the Community Roundtables. It's unclear how the app would do rolls offline, as that could cut access to Quantum Roll.
Beta
The first Closed Beta testers got access to the app in Late December 2020/Early January 2021. Participants where required to sign a NDA.
On Jan 28th, Roll20 tweeted about the Closed Beta being underway, and that the Open Beta would be available "soon". tweet
Development
In early 2020, on one of the Roundtables(Jan, Feb or March?) it was first mentioned by Roll20 that they were working on a new mobile app, but at the time described features that were intended for the first release, were considerably different from what was announced During Roll20Con 2020.
The development of the app was de-prioritized in favor of focusing on general infrastructure and stability upgrades, when the massive increase of users started due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In December 2020, the Closed Beta got started.
Old Mobile App
Roll20 had an previous mobile app (Android/iOS) that had a mixed track record, which was discontinued and removed from the app stores during the Spring 2020.
