Modifier (A.K.A "Mod/Mods") is a common term for something that alter character stats or roll results in a game.
E.g. "the magic sword has an +1 attack mod" means that you add +1 to whatever result your attack rolls normally get.
Ability Scores and Mods
In many D&D5E- & d20/3.5E-based games, characters have separate Ability Scores and Ability Modifiers(often shortened to "mods"), which are linked (see table to the right).
At character creation, the Ability Scores are often rolled or determined to be between 3 to 18, which corresponds to a modifier between -4 and +4.
The 6 commonly used (primary) Abilities:
- Strength, measuring physical power
- Dexterity, measuring agility
- Constitution, measuring endurance
- Intelligence, measuring reasoning and memory
- Wisdom, measuring Perception and Insight
- Charisma, measuring force of Personality
